A Note To First Year Teachers

πŸ‘‹ Hi New Teachers!

Welcome to the teaching profession.

Congratulations on choosing one of the most rewarding careers. I’m assuming your love for learning led you to this profession. If that is true, rest assured, you’ve chosen the right path because your learning has just begun. Teachers, particularly new teachers, are learners.

As teachers, we constantly improve our professional practice through exploration, application, and collaboration. Your exploration will take many forms. Whether it be scholarly articles, professional development, peer observations, or simply perusing Pinterest, your research will shape your pedagogy.

What’s a little research without application? Just theory. Day to day you will be applying and revising those practices in front of your classroom. Some ideas may crash and burn, others might emerge from the ashes. That’s the beauty of the teaching profession: every day, every year, we improve. That’s why we call it teaching practice!

Another way to improve is through collaboration. Your collaboration will come from many sources: colleagues, staff, parents, students, etc. Keep an open mind, eye, ear, and heart and you will grow from the words of others.

I hope my blog and resources support you during your first year of teaching. Your growth and development as a new teacher will impact the lives of your students by creating transformational change within your classroom, at your school site, and within the community. Feel free to reach out to me with any type of question, concern or to just vent on a particularly rough day.
